I read quite a few books about composting when I started my compost journey, and this one was my favorite out of all of them. It was written by Michelle Balz, who is a well respected composting expert.

This book thoroughly explains all of the basic methods of composting, along with troubleshooting help and beautiful photos and illustrations throughout. If you have to choose only one book to read about composting, let it be this one!

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to create your own compost at home.

COMPOSTING FOR THE ABSOLUTE BEGINNER

This beginner’s guide written by Dede Cummings is a great starting point if you want to start composting but don’t have any idea where to start. You won’t get too bogged down by details meant for advanced composters, but you’ll learn everything you need to get going.

COMPOSTING: INSIDE & OUT

Written by Stephanie Davies, self proclaimed “Urban Worm Girl”. As a fan of worms myself, I was excited to read this book.

This book takes a deeper dive into the science of composting and the reasons why composting is important. While there’s still a good portion dedicated to the how of composting. While this book has great information I don’t recommend that you start here if you’re just learning to compost. Make it your second or third read!

THE COMPLETE COMPOST GARDENING GUIDE

This is a charming, beautiful guide co-authored by Barbara Pleasant and Deborah L. Martin, two very well respected figures in the world of composting.

This book is rich with information, but also filled with beautiful illustrations and photos to help you along your journey. This makes it easier to read than some of these other books that can feel a little dense at times. It’s a great choice whether you’re a beginner or you’ve been composting for a long time!

ORGANIC BOOK OF COMPOST

The Organic Book of Compost by Pauline Pears is a comprehensive guide to composting that covers everything from the basics to more advanced techniques. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn about composting, from beginners to experts.

COMPOST: THE NATURAL WAY TO MAKE FOOD FOR YOUR GARDEN

This book by Ken Thompson, aims to teach the basics of composting in an accessible, easy-to-read way. It covers topics like what compost is and why it’s important; how to make your own compost bin; the best materials for making compost (including kitchen scraps); and even some recipes for using your new supply of soil! This book also includes fun facts about gardening you may not have known before.

This book is perfect if you want to learn more about one of the most natural things there are: recycling organic waste into something useful. Compost Stew teaches readers everything they need to know, without being too complicated or difficult for beginners.

THE MINIFARMING GUIDE TO COMPOSTING

The author of The Mini Farming Guide to Composting has made it his mission to encourage mini-farming. That is, learning to be self-sufficient on a plot of land as small as 1/4 of an acre! He has a number of books in his mini farming series, but this installment will teach you all about composting, and why it’s an essential part of mini farming.

BONUS: THE BEST COMPOSTING BOOKS FOR KIDS

WHAT’S SPROUTING IN MY TRASH

This adorable children’s book written by Esther Porter is so informative! It takes little readers through every step of the composting process, so they’ll be excited to start composting right along with you!

The end of the book even includes directions on how to do a “Composting In A Jar” experiment. This is a great way to get children involved with the process of composting and for them to be able to see how it works!

COMPOST STEW: AN A TO Z RECIPE FOR THE EARTH

This children’s book written by Mary McKenna Siddals is another fantastic story written in an ABC rhyme for the very youngest composters. Kids will learn just how many things can go into a compost pile, and what happens to them along the way in the composting journey.

The illustrations in this book are great too – they’re very colorful and will keep kids interested as you read it together. It’ll be sure to get your little ones excited about composting!

LET’S COMPOST!: CARING FOR OUR PLANET

Another great children’s book about composting is Let’s Compost! by Vita Jienez. This book is less informative and more about making composting fun and interesting. The words of the story are also set to music, and the book even comes with an audio CD so that kids can easily learn to sing along and get excited to change the world through composting!
